No Goal

Some things in our lives are decided on the whim of a moment. One such moment on Saturday July 30th 1966 saw a Russian linesman make a decision that would change the shape of English football forever. Geoff Hurst’s powerful effort had bounced off the underside of the bar, spinning back into play after seemingly crossing the line. It was adjudged a goal.

NO GOAL takes us into an imagined world where the decision went the other way, to a front room somewhere in England where football fan Roy Turner knew at that moment that the fate of England and Geoff Hurst would shape his life forever. The Russian linesman Tofiq Bahramov said no, and it became a moment from which English football would soon begin to look very different. To find out how… read NO GOAL.

‘By the end of October West Ham were five points clear at the top of the First Division and even the early doubters in the press had been won over.’

‘Meanwhile ‘The Other Ron‘ is coming to Upton Park. I‘ll have to call him that until I see how he does.’

‘The semi-finals threw a real tough challenge England‘s way as they faced Argentina and the brilliance of football‘s new skill-king Diego Maradona.’

‘That’s another word that is over-used. Loyalty. Some of these kids wouldn’t know loyalty if it shat in their laps.’

‘Even at Wimbledon we get the Government’s Press Office ringing us up for free tickets whenever any of the big four are in town.’
